The Karakoram Highway follows a network of ancient trade routes linking of human endeavor from the campaigns of Alexander the Great to the British Russian Great Game. Through here Buddhism reached China from India.
This bus schedules permits you to spend a few days in places you may like to explore. The drive goes from the Silk Road oasis of Kashgar in western China to the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. Along the way it crosses the Khunjerab Pass (4800m, 15,750ft), otherwise known as the 'Valley of Blood' - a reference to local bandits who took advantage of the terrain to plunder caravans and slaughter merchants.
More blood was spilt during the 20 years it took to push, level and blast the present 1300km (800mi) highway through the mountains: over 400 road-builders died, and it doesn't take more than a few hours in this hostile terrain to figure out why. The road was opened in 1986 for tourism. It is now being widened and improved to be usable all year. This to be finished by 2010, at present it is only open during the summer month. Land slides and rock fall does sometime close it during the rainy season for a few days. It is probably one of the most beautiful roads in the world, the glaciers and peaks that can be seen are mind-bending, the towns and villages along the KKH are among the safest and most hospitable in Pakistan.
From the actual highway are many possibilities to explore beautiful valleys, villages and mountains.
Within reach of the KKH is some of the most awe inspiring mountain scenery anywhere. The Karakoram boasts the highest concentration of lofty peaks, long glaciers in the world. This strategic region is also dense with history and cultural artifacts. Driving time per day is limited to give a chance for photo stops. No driving in the dark. The buses used are mini busses 8 seater, so that it will never be crowded.

Our agents offer excursions from these towns as well as from Islamabad, Kashgar and Bishkek. They can also assist with transportation from abroad to these cities.
We recommend strongly that you purchase a health insurance that covers medical transportation as the hospital facilities in this region are not the best. Bring all medicine that you may need. The Khunjerab Pass is almost 5000 m, so you may need oxygen. Northern Pakistan is a Muslim region, this must be taken into account when dressing especially for ladies. Veils and head covers though are not required.
Visa must be obtained in advance they can not be obtained at the border. This includes Kazakhstan and India.
